I recently came across the work of photographer and journalist Gervasio Sanchez. I decided to write this short paragraph because of the way I was touched by his work. It is not often that I come across a person whose work expresses so much respect. I remember when I first discovered the work of photographer Steve McCurry. Nothing I’d seen before transmitted me so much love, kindness, compassion and respect for the subject of the photograph. Such work is unique because it surpasses the confines of art. Content and form are so tightly bonded that you cannot separate one from the other. Most distinguishably is the capacity and the skill of these photographers to encode into an image their own humanity; how they are able to turn suffering and agony into beauty. This is only possible because their understanding of the reality they work with is exceptional, and this understanding is precisely what nurtures their compassion. The one constant throughout their work is the respect they have for the people they are photographing, and this respect is what makes it possible for us viewers to see beyond the horror, and find beauty in the expression of human dignity.
